Die Antwoord: Donker mag -review

 

Something familiar but yet something new. That is how I describe Die Antwoords new album, Donker mag.

Previous two albums have been a mixture of dance, rave and hiphop sounds and this new one is no exception to that. The first single Cookie Thumper is a really dirty and sexist hip hop take featuring only Yo-Landi Vi$$er, the female vocalist of Die Antwoord.  The second single Pitbull terrier is a deeper blunge into rave and I might say thats probably most perfect pastiche of that genre I have ever heard. It really captures the essence of the beginning of the 90´s and it has a hard beat, which I always enjoy ;-) 
 
Ugly boy is a melodic song with a background loaned from Aphex Twin. It really works and has a sunny refrain to it. Other highlights are Happy go sucky fucky and Sex which is a really mellowed down dance song, totally unlike Die Antwoord, who are usually all over the place.

This is a third album with primarily the same album concept. I hope that the fourth one delivers more unexpected moments than this one, but all in all, I really enjoyed this. And It´s always a plus that band does their own thing and doesnt bow to any trends.
