Blutengel: Monument -review

An ear opener for me with this band was the excellent You walk away. With Depeche Modeish vocals and epic refrain, it is one of the best songs I´ve heard for a while. And that one song urged me to buy this new album, Monument.

For a band who has released so many albums (first one was released in 1999), they sound very fresh and universal. Biggest references come from the 80´s but there are also songs, which have a strong 90´s feel (like in All these lies). Compared to previous albums, the dark tones have become a little bit lighter and more mainstream. Maybe an attempt to draw in new listeners?

My favorites are You walk away, Kinder diese stadt, All these lies and Willst du? The biggest crowd pleasers are in the beginning of the album but that doesnt mean that you cant enjoy the rest of the album ;-)

Chris Pohls vocals are very dark and monotone, but that goes with the image. This is dark industrial music after all. I also enjoy that some of lyrics are in German, which creates a heavy Rammstein feel.

As the deluxe edition comes with a bonus cd (as always with industrial bands), this is worth your money. And the cover looks very beautiful, like a painting :-)

I give this 4/5 stars.
