Why the Finnish music is not enough

I´ve wanted to express my opinion about Finnish music for a long time, and now is the time to do it.  Although there are many excellent artists below mainstream in the Finnish market( like Kebu, Audile, TV OFF, Orkidea etc. ) the majority of the music is well below average. This rant is provoked by the recent success of the Finnish music show Vain elämää (Just life in English) and the hysteria in the record market caused by this. The idea of the programme is that well-known artists gather together and sing each others songs (and apparently cry a lot). The album that contains these songs has sold over 220 000 copies which means it has sold better than any record in Finland in this millennium.

Let me break it down for you:

1. The presence of rock and heavy in Finland
Yeah yeah we Finnish live in a cold and dark place, that doesnt necessarily mean that we want to listen that music. All that is not rock or heavy is considered a laughing stock, something to ridicule. And when someone makes a dance tune, it is compared to 90´s eurodance, although there are no characteristics in that particular song. Are the wounds of that era´s musical landscape really there ready to open up when ever a dance song comes around? Also Finnish rockbands play the same shit over and over again. The shit sounds the same if its made today or 20 years ago. There are no really radical rockgroups in Finland who would like to experiment with machines like Muse or Kent.

2. The pathetic attempt in Finland to ride on the dance band wagon
There are a few unbelievably pitiful attemps in the mainstream with dancemusic now. Like Jannika B or Diandra, whose whiny vocals accompany dull backgrounds. Also there are artists like Jenni Vartiainen, who have done dance oriented songs, but these are not really dance, are they? They are done partially with real instruments or in the perspective that they could be played easily in front of a live audience. And when played live, they lose almost every electronic aspect of that song.
--> SO the dance music doesnt come from the heart but out purely out of financial reasons.

3. Ballads
Why the hell Finnish artists specialize in ballads!!!?? Ballad is a difficult song, the melody should really stand out and not be some plain piano and a woman who sings ludicrous lyrics.

4. Lyrics
Finnish lyrics are absolute nonsense and artsy.

5. Compared to other countries..
...well having listened to popmusic from other countries, Finland ranks among them definitely in the bottom half. Listen  for example Russian, Swedish or Danish music and you see why.

Having listed these things, theres no wonder that some utter crap like Vain elämää is so popular. What could you expect from people who live in this pathetic musical landscape, who cant separate eurodance from pop.
