Rolf Maier-Bode interview

This time its Rolf Maier-Bodes turn to answer my tricky questions...

1. Congratulations for the new album Twenty Thirteen! How your fans have reacted to your new music?

Thanks! Many fans seem to like “Twenty Thirteen” though i was a bit unsure because it is so diverse. It ranges vom Trance/Progressive to ChillOut and Score and there is even a kind of "housey" song... But most of the buyers of the CD seem to be very happy with it.

2. How would you describe your music today? There are same elements as in RMB era.

Well, if you mean beats, synths and a piano then yes, there are similarities. But I use totally different equipment than in the 90s. Analog selfbuilt synths, giant sample libraries and analog outboard mostly. So all similarities you might hear are my personal style to compose and produce music.

3. Where do you draw inspiration?

For “Twenty Thirteen” i played a lot with my analog synths. The tactile “hands on” feeling and immediate response to changes is so much more inspiring than mousing over a plug in... Most inspiration comes from simply doing music. My trailer on youtube shows that a bit maybe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s3tLTC_yEA

4. Living outside the mainstream music, what do you think of electronic music today? Mp3s, Spotify etc?
The music market suffers from too many releases. I know that its a modern “democratic” thought that anybody can do anything including creative arts like musik (or film). There is so much “hobby quality” music (and film) flooding the internet that people cant find the real pearls anymore. And for many music became just background noise...

5. Is there bands, projects or artists you look up to? Or hate?

Why should i hate any artist? But there is lots and lots of uninteresting music. I personally listen to all kinds of styles and to music from all decades. And there is one thing that you can learn from that: A great song is a great song. The “sound of the month” may change, but real art will prevail. And there is a kind of “energy” that i like that can be part of classic music, pop, rock and of course electronic. If energy and emotions come together, thats what i love...

6. What is your favorite song in your own catalogue?

Always the one i am working on :-D

7. You use the same vocalists as in RMB era, is there a favorite vocalist? And why?

Its just one song done with Christina Lux that is on “Twenty Thirteen”, so that is not a scheme. A favorite vocalist? No, there are just so many out there... And i am always looking... For example the voice on “The Unknown Place”; the vocalist is a young women who i met in a small concert just around the corner of my home and i happened to like her voice very much...

8. How does the future look like for you?

I will go on selling “Twenty Thirteen” CDs via my website, will provide (iTunes) downloads later on and hope for more interviews to come :) Maybe a music video will be done and remixes are also a possibility...

Thanks for the interview!

Thank you!
